Većinu svoje mladosti u Southamptonu Craig David provodi na krevetu s blokom i olovkom - smišlja i piše tekstove, dok istovremeno melodije pjevuši u diktafon. Glazbenu karijeru započinje kao MC na lokalnoj piratskoj radio stanici sa tek navršenih 14 godina. Istovremeno dane provodi svirajući R'n'B u lokalnim klubovima čekajući na svoju veliku priliku. Životna se prilika ukazala u liku Marka Hilla, polovice Artful Dodger ekipe.
Zajedno rade na prvom hitu "Rewind" (Public Demand etiketa) koji je postao pravi underground hit svih radio postaja i nezaobilazna stvar svih engleskih klubova. Malo po malo za Craigovu se nadarenost pročulo, a on sam postao je tražena roba. Utjecajni engleski DJ-i engleskog Radija 1 svakodnevno vrte "Rewind" što mu je otvorilo vrata i ulazak na engleske top liste.
"Fill Me In", singl koji je usljedio nakon debi singla "Rewind", ulazi ravno na broj jedan britanske top liste singlova, a Craig David postaje najmlađi solo umjetnik koji je do tada došao na sam vrh top liste. Treći singl u karijeri "7 Days", a drugi s debi albuma "Born To Do It", ruši sve dotadašnje rekorde; i singl i album (samo u prvom tjednu prodan u 225.000 primjeraka!!!) ulaze ravno na #1 britanske ljestvice singlova što se nije desilo niti jednom izvođaču još od davne 1972. godine. Uzevši u obzir njegove godine, stvar postaje još vrijednija pažnje jer ovo je tek početak!
Album prvijenac "Born To Do It" suludo se prodaje u Njemačkoj, Nizozemskoj, Švedskoj, Danskoj, a u Japanu je samo prvoga tjedna planulo 70.000 primjeraka.
Bez sumnje ovo je sretno vrijeme za Craiga Davida koji još niti sam ne može vjerovati da mu se sve ovo doista događa.
